Avatar: the sci-fi to reality
Like the Avatar, Swiss scientists have managed to create out of body experiences in volunteer projects in virtual reality.
The Avatar inspires researchers, especially the last practice experiences What Earthlings. Indeed, in history to escape the toxic atmosphere of the planet Pandora, the characters convey their minds into cloned bodies so that they arrive to "fly" in the environment. Like the film, the neurologists of the Polytechnic School of Lausanne are now able to "project" volunteers in digital avatars that they were able to move in a virtual environment. Work they presented last Thursday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington.
If the experiment represents a further step to recreate the science laboratory of Avatar, it was not the objective here of Swiss scientists. In fact, their research focuses primarily on the brain and the mechanisms that enable it to determine body position in space, using information provided by our senses. For that, they had an idea: recreate experiences outside the body using the cameras and virtual reality. Typically, these phenomena occur when the brain is more corrupt: the person awake then sees his own body from outside.
study the role of touch and vision
But Swiss scientists have developed a technique to simulate the experience: the volunteer wears glasses with video screens that broadcast the images coming a camera placed behind his back.
