Arthropods: Discovery of "cactus works" unusual creature
German scientists are studying the "cactus works", a body discovered in south-western China. It might help to better understand the origin of the group of arthropods.
Arthropods are organisms characterized by an external skeleton (mostly composed of chitin, as in ants, for example) and have legs. They include more than one and a half million different species among which are the trilobites, crustaceans, arachnids and insects of all kinds.
Researchers at the University of Berlin are part of the discovery of "cactus works "in the journal Nature. This could be the closest known relative of the arthropod current indicates Sciences et Avenir. Measuring six inches, this creature resembles a species of worm, but who has ten pairs of jointed legs and spiny .
lobopodia This worm (with appendages) in any case has evolved enough to have jointed limbs ultimate achievement. For researchers, this tends to prove that this organization has evolved gradually hardening its forelegs appears that its external skeleton. The study should continue to determine if all other arthropods followed the same path.

Energy Saving Lamps: precautions
mercury content, level of emission of electromagnetic waves ... The debate about the possible toxicity of fluorescent lamps is revived by the Consumer Safety Commission
The Consumer Safety Commission (SCC) recommends taking precautions in the choice or use of low consumption lamps, while "their possible harm is being debated, "she says in a statement.
The low energy light bulbs, also called CFLs," have replaced the traditional incandescent lamps, power-hungry too, "said the CSC .
They consume 4 to 5 times less power for equivalent performance in terms of lighting "and according to the manufacturers, their" life is between 6,000 and 10,000 hours against 1000 hours for a conventional bulb.
But "their potential harmfulness debate is "in terms of mercury content and emission level of electromagnetic waves, said the SAC.
Recommendations
" In the current state of knowledge " Commission advises consumers to "emphasize the purchase of lights showing the amounts of mercury as low as possible."
"If you break" from one of these lamps, it recommends to break the long leave the room and then pick up the pieces carefully with gloves and paper towels and place them in plastic bags, but do not vacuum, "which helps to airborne particles of mercury."
She also advises to keep a minimum distance of 30 cm from a lamp in such prolonged exposure.
In addition, the CSC calls on authorities to "determine the maximum exposure to the vapors of mercury into the air" and hopes that "the EU Directive on the Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical ... Read more on LEXPRESS.fr

This is the finding "alarming" has drawn the consumer association UFC-Que Choisir. Yesterday she issued a survey which highlighted the enormous differences. worse, "one of the houses surveyed were classified according to the diagnosticians, C, D or E, with an estimated consumption of 134 kilowatt hours (kWh) to 244 kWh per m2 per year, representing an annual bill ranging from 1,000 to 1,800 euros! ". results close to those recorded in 2008 during a similar survey which proves that nothing has been done in the area. The Association therefore calls on governments to "take immediate measures to ensure reliable ECD techniques" and "to perfect the ECD between the buyer and seller for the responsibility of the diagnostician can be held liable for misdiagnosis" .

Global warming responsible for health problems
With global warming, the Earth could rapidly become a planet warmer and wetter.
"Changes in the seasonal occurrence of these toxic algae are imminent [...] We can expect a significant increase of these algae in the estuary of Puget Sound and other similar ecosystems within 30 years and maybe in the next decade, "said researchers at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), cited by Sciences et Avenir.
A second study by the University of Georgia shows that, under the effect of global warming, dust from Deserts accumulates in the atmosphere, thus promoting the growth of harmful bacteria. Indeed, these bacteria present in the oceans, need iron to grow, gold dust suspended in the air carry a lot.
"Twenty-four hours after mixing of the dust of the desert from Morocco with seawater samples, we observed an increase in vibrio bacteria from ten to thousand times that a strain capable of cause cholera, "says researcher Eric Lipp.

EasyJet put on a new coating to reduce its consumption Fuel
airline EasyJet has launched the experimentation of a new coating that using nanotechnology should enable it to reduce fuel consumption of its aircraft.
The cabins of all aircraft EasyJet may soon be covered with a coating already used by the U.S. Air Force, to develop more aerodynamic devices, and thus consume less fuel.
Quoted by the Daily Mail, the manufacturer of this coating estimated 2% fuel economy that could well be made each year if this technology was applied to the entire fleet of the company. An economy that represent more than 23 million euros, in addition to avoiding a significant amount of emissions of greenhouse gas emissions.
To date, only eight of EasyJet planes are equipped with this coating. In testing phase, the British low cost airline for a year compare fuel consumption of these devices with the rest of his fleet. "We are very happy to test this special coating on our products. The effectiveness is part of the identity of EasyJet. If we can find new ways to reduce our fuel, we will provide our passengers with low rates and a reduced environmental footprint, "then promised Carolyn McCall, the CEO of the company.

Selective sorting: a headache for the British
outside this city in record sorting, twenty other municipalities in the United Kingdom have each day to sort among seven different types of garbage. The Alliance for taxpayers who conducted the investigation found "ridiculous putting unnecessary pressure on households." For her, "it's not a good way to encourage recycling.

How To Tell If You Had A Pin Stroke
Avatar: the sci-fi to reality
Like the Avatar, Swiss scientists have managed to create out of body experiences in volunteer projects in virtual reality.
The Avatar inspires researchers, especially the last practice experiences What Earthlings. Indeed, in history to escape the toxic atmosphere of the planet Pandora, the characters convey their minds into cloned bodies so that they arrive to "fly" in the environment. Like the film, the neurologists of the Polytechnic School of Lausanne are now able to "project" volunteers in digital avatars that they were able to move in a virtual environment. Work they presented last Thursday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington.
If the experiment represents a further step to recreate the science laboratory of Avatar, it was not the objective here of Swiss scientists. In fact, their research focuses primarily on the brain and the mechanisms that enable it to determine body position in space, using information provided by our senses. For that, they had an idea: recreate experiences outside the body using the cameras and virtual reality. Typically, these phenomena occur when the brain is more corrupt: the person awake then sees his own body from outside.
study the role of touch and vision
But Swiss scientists have developed a technique to simulate the experience: the volunteer wears glasses with video screens that broadcast the images coming a camera placed behind his back.

How Does Strep Get On The Buttocks?
Brittany complaint against France Nature Environment

The Quai Branly Museum is committed for sustainable development
On 10 February, the Musée du Quai Branly has signed the Charter of Sustainable Development Institutions and Public Enterprises, marking its commitment to ecology. The museum is the 55th signatory of the Charter in the context of National Sustainable Development Strategy 2010-2013 adopted in July
This signing is the culmination of the commitment to sustainable development, the museum realized by Jean Nouvel, whose project was supported by Jacques Chirac. "From the outset of the project, the Musée du Quai Branly desired state responsibility in environmental matters. Several sites continue to be conducted to improve the management of resources, streamlining such as lighting, water consumption and waste segregation, "said the president of the college Stéphane Martin, quoted by the website zegreenweb .
Designed to provide optimum energy performance, the museum plans to recycle the materials used for exhibitions, reinforces its commitment with the signing of this text which is initially launching a " Strategic Thinking for Sustainable Development identify their own issues, share and set objectives in the field of specific expertise. "Reflection and the results should be translated into policy, management and the various projects of the institution.
The museum will develop an action plan "to integrate the principles of governance and implementation of previously defined", which will put ecology at the heart of the strategy of the museum

Canada: mysterious slaughter of bees at the Royal Ontario Museum
In just two days, 20,000 bees living in the past two years the gallery of the biodiversity of the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Canada have died without the cause of this carnage has been determined . The MRO
expressed in this mysterious massacre last weekend, reports the site 20minutes.fr. According to the spokesman for the museum, Amanda fruitful, the sudden death of his thousands of bees is not due to Colony Collapse Syndrome, the name given to the phenomenon of diminishing bee colonies observed worldwide and particularly in Europe since plusieurs années.
Des scientifiques du monde entier tentent de déterminer l'origine This excess mortality for the time unsuccessfully

A fungus is decimating bat
Already proven by the destruction of their habitat due to deforestation or urbanization, the bats that live in North America are facing a virulent fungus , detected for the first time in 2006 in New York, USA. The origins of white nose syndrome (characterized by the appearance of a white ring around the snout), this fungus is deadly pour ces animaux outre-Atlantique.
Les chauves-souris se nourrissant d'insectes, leur disparition pourrait entraîner des ravages dans les cultures, or an increase in the number of cases of diseases transmitted by insect bites. And if the Canadian biologists are worried, it's also because this fungus from Europe, attacked the bats of North America, while this is not the case on the Old Continent. These animals do not die.
The Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health decided to establish a protection zone soon and primary research to determine the extent of the spread of the syndrome.

Canada Life group of young crows more stressful than married life adult
Published in Biology Letters, a study by German and Polish on Polish crows a forest shows that life in "gangs" of young birds generates more stress than married life they carry into adulthood
By analyzing the feces of young crows in group living in the forest of Bialowieza, Poland, scientists have noted levels of corticosterone, a stress hormone called superior to those seen in adults of the same species nesting pair in that environment.
"In the case of the crows, it is clear that finding food and sharing it is easier when a group of 30 individuals is looking for a carcass, that when only two crows do," explains Dr. Nuria Selva. But the new findings suggest it may be more costly in energy live band that couple to defend a territory and its resources: competition for dominance within the group could cause more stress.
Better pressures experienced during the gang life can lead young crows settle in a relationship, the more stable towards their adult life, so. "Somehow, we believe that there are many similarities with human life: the stressful life of gangs of teenagers compared to a more peaceful life, as a couple," says Dr. Selva.

Selva.
